“Did Dorothy leave you a message?” Axe stared at his phone in confusion.
They’d been out on a pretty big fire most of the night, and when they got back to the station, he saw a missed call from Dorothy. It wasn’t like her to call them in the middle of the night, not when Crew was home with her.
“Yeah.” Felix pressed a button and put it on speaker.
“Hey. Just wanted to call and say I love you. Good night. See you in the morning.”
Axe pressed the button for his voicemail and hit speaker. Dorothy’s voice filled the room again. “Axe.” There was a long pause. “I just called to tell you I love you. Be safe.”
Axe’s hackles went up. Glancing at the clock, he was relieved to see their shift was almost over. “Something’s wrong. She didn’t sound right. Call Crew.” Axe tried calling her phone, but it went straight to voicemail. “She’s not answering.”
“Hey Crew.” Felix hit speaker. “Is everything ok?”
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t it be?” His voice sounded as though he had just woken up.
“Can you wake Dorothy up? She called last night and didn’t sound right.”
“What the fuck?” Axe listened as Crew shuffled around. “She’s not in the bed. Hang on. Dorothy?” Crew called out.
Felix shot Axe look of concern. “Where is she? Didn’t ya’ll go to bed together?”
“Yeah. I think. Fuck I don’t remember.”
“What do you mean you don’t remember?” Felix quirked a brown.
“I don’t know. It’s weird. I can’t remember anything from yesterday. Dorothy?” Crew’s voice got louder.
“Go check her room, Crew. This is really fucked up.” Axe grumbled into the phone.
“I’m doing that now.” Axe heard the distinct sound of him walking down the steps. “She’s not in her room. Fuck. Dorothy.” He cried out.
“We’re coming home.” Felix grabbed his shit and headed out of the room.
“Crew. What happened last night?” Axe spoke as he followed Felix out to their car.
“”I don’t know.” His voice cracked. He was just as freaked out about this as they were.
Felix returned and waved Axe to follow him. “Come on. Chief said we can leave now. Let’s go find our girl.”
Axe kept Crew on the line as they got in the car. “Check our rooms. ” Axe closed his eyes. Where the hell had she gone.
“Axe. Did you lock your door?”
“No. Why? Is it locked?”
“Yeah.” He could hear Crew banging on the door. “Dorothy, baby? Are you in there? If she’s in there, she’s not answering. Should I break your door down?”
“No.” Axe gritted his teeth. If she was in his room with the door locked, there was a reason. And since Crew couldn’t remember anything from last night—Axe was a betting man that it had something to do with him. Felix made it to their house in record time. “We’re pulling in the drive now.”
Axe hung up and jumped out of the car. Felix threw it into park and jumped out as well. He was behind Axe when he got to the top of the stairs, where Crew stood leaning against the closed door.
“I don’t know what happened last night, Crew. But she called and left a message on both our phones. Something was wrong. She didn’t sound right. You need to rack your fucking brain and try to remember what fucking happened. Now move.”
Axe pushed past him and tapped on the door. “Baby. It’s Axe. You in there?” He pressed his ear to the door and listened. “Sweetheart. Please let me in. I can’t help you from out here.”
“Axe?” Her voice filtered through the closed barrier.
“Yeah, baby. It’s me. Can I come inside?”
“Just you?”
Axe glanced back at Felix, who nodded. He didn’t care if it was just him, as long as she let one of them in. “Yeah. Just me.”
The lock turned, and she cracked open the door. Dorothy hid behind the wood, concealing herself from view. Axe slipped inside and turned to look at her as she shut the door and relocked it.
“Baby?” Axe cocked his head in confusion.
Dorothy caught him off guard when she launched herself at him and wrapped her arms around his middle. Her body shook with sobs as she clung to Axe.
“Fuck. Baby.” Axe carried her to his bed. His insides twisted when he saw the wet pillowcase she had been crying on. “You’ve been crying all night? Jesus.”
Axe sat down and pulled her into his lap. “Baby, can you tell me what happened? Did Crew hurt you?” Axe was seeing red. He didn’t think Crew would hurt her, but seeing her torn up like this had him questioning his best friends’ capabilities.
“No. Yes. I don’t know.” She sobbed against him.
“Ok.” Axe pressed a kiss to her head. “Take a breath for me.” Her body shook as she inhaled and blew out the air. “Now. Did Crew hurt you physically?” She shook her head against his chest. “Ok. Not physical. But he hurt you?”
“Yes. Axe, something is wrong with him.”
She explained how Crew was acting when he got home. She thought he was better once they took a bath, but when they were lying in bed, he started talking in his sleep.
“He said the mayor’s name?”
“Yes. But it gets worse.” She bit her lip. “When I tried to wake him, he pulled away from me and said…” she sobbed again.
“It’s ok, baby. Just tell me. Crew said what?”
“He said ‘Stop, Dorothy. Don’t touch me’. Then rolled away, and when I touched him, he jerked away from me. Axe—he wasn’t himself. Something is really wrong.”
“Yeah. I’m thinking so too. He doesn’t remember anything from yesterday or last night. He said its all a blank. Did ya’ll drink?”
“No. He didn’t come home until ten. And like I said, he was completely out of it.”
“And he didn’t smell like liquor?” Axe furrowed his brows in confusion.
“No.”
“Alright.” Axe pulled the sheets down and patted the bed. “Get in. You need to get some proper sleep. I can look at you and tell you didn’t sleep last night.”
“I don’t think I can.” She shook her head.
“Yes. You can. I’m going to come back and hold you. But first I need to go talk to Felix and Crew. We’re going to figure this out, I promise.”
“Thank you. I feel like I’m going crazy.”
“You’re not crazy.” Axe leaned down and pressed his lips to her lips. “I’ll be back.”
Axe opened the door to find Crew and Felix pacing the hall. “Let’s go downstairs so we can talk.”
“I need to see her.” Crew started toward the door.
“No. You don’t. I realize you don’t remember anything from yesterday, but you did something that hurt her. She needs some sleep and you going in there will not help.”
“Fuck.” Crew ran his fingers through his hair. “I didn’t hurt her… physically, did I?”
“No. Otherwise I’d be kicking your ass right now.”
Axe headed down the steps and stood in front of the couch. He didn’t plan on taking a lot of time to discuss this right now. Dorothy needed him more.
“First.” Axe took a breath. “What do you remember from yesterday?”
“Standing in Evelyn’s office.”
Felix shook his head. “Since when are you two on a first name basis?”
“She won’t let it go. She all but threatened my job again if I didn’t call her by her name.” Crew paced the floor. “What am I supposed to do? She’ll fire me if I don’t do what she says.”
“Let her. Fuck Crew. Are you really going to let a job fuck up what you have with Dorothy? Because that’s what’s happening. Last night, after you had sex with her. You called out to Evelyn in your sleep. And as if it couldn’t get worse, you told Dorothy to stop touching you.” Axe was yelling. He couldn’t help it. He was pissed. “What the fuck, dude?”
Felix stepped close to him and grabbed his shirt. “You’re an asshole.”
“Felix.” Axe shook his head at him. “You’re not helping matters. I don’t know what’s going on Crew.” Axe’s eyes were cutting daggers at him. “But your boss is causing problems for Dorothy and you. You’re going to have to figure out what the hell happened yesterday. And then grovel for fucking forgiveness. She cried all night, Crew. All. Fucking. Night.” Axe stormed past him. “I’m going to bed. Felix, she’s staying in my room. She doesn’t want to be upstairs or in her room right now. You can come in and see her. But you.” Axe pointed at Crew. “Can’t. Not right now. Figure your shit out, Crew. Or you’re going to lose her and us.”
Axe stormed up the stairs and let himself back into his room. Dorothy was curled up on the bed. Even sound asleep, she was still crying. “Fuck.” Axe stripped off his clothes and crawled into bed beside her. Just as he tucked her against him, Felix came in.
“How is she?” He crept toward the bed.
“She’s fucking crying in her sleep. How do you think she is? He fucking hurt her. I know he didn’t mean it, but fuck.” Axe closed his eyes in frustration.
“Move over.” Felix motioned for Axe to scoot back. “I’m not leaving her either.”
Axe pressed his back against the wall and pulled Dorothy closer. Felix crawled into bed and snuggled up against her front. He ran his fingers through her hair and sighed.
“What’s happening?” His uncertainty penetrated the silence.
“I don’t know. But it involves Evelyn Wick somehow.”
“Let’s just hold her for now. We can figure the rest out later.” Felix rested his head against her shoulder and closed his eyes.
Axe was exhausted too. The fire had taken all night, leaving no time for sleep. Lacing his fingers with hers, he closed his eyes and held onto her hand. Everything about being in the bed with her like this felt ominous. Like a shift was occurring within their relationship. A shift that would lead to bad things. Axe didn’t like it—at all.
He loved Dorothy. She had his heart, and Axe never wanted it back. It was hers forever, and no one—not even Evelyn Wick would change that.
Axe would walk away from his friends if meant Dorothy’s happiness.
Even if losing Felix and Crew hurt, he’s do it… for her.
